Wage Slavery 8: Turning tables in New York

When last we left the WildeRix, his plans in Arkansas had gone awry, and he set his sights for Manhattan. Let’s see what happens next…

Watching the way that New York City pulled together after 9/11 really gave us faith in the City.  The people rallied to each other’s aid.  They exhibited so much pride in their community.  And New York, believe it or not, really works on a community level.  The 5 boroughs each have myriad neighborhoods within them that maintain as distinct of a flavor as individual towns.

Wage Slavery 7: Gang aft agley

When last we left the WildeRix, he had left Texas for Arkansas yet again. Let’s see what happens next…

Many folks have quoted the idea born from Robert Burn’s poem “To a Mouse” and recite the proverb about the best laid schemes of mice and men:

But Mousie, thou are no thy-lane,
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men,
Gang aft agley,
An’ lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain,
For promis’d joy!

Acorns

When you think of edible nuts, you probably never think of acorns.  Squirrels love them, and farmers feed them to their hogs, but not too many people today think of eating these nuts that were once a staple of many Native American diets long before the domestication of maize.

Wage Slavery 6: Just say no (to salespeople)

When last we left the WildeRix, he had caught a glimpse of his wage slavery future. Let’s see what happens next…

After spending a summer working for my dad again, I moved back to Texas.  I still planned on getting my in-state residency and going to UT Austin in order to get my MA and PhD in linguistics.   But I realized that just because I wanted to go to school in Austin didn’t mean that I had to actually live there until school started.  My old roommate from Austin had moved to Fort Worth and told me that the rental prices up there didn’t stick it to you quite as bad as they did down in the capitol.  So my girlfriend and I loaded up a U-Haul and headed down to Texas.

The Morningsider (Installment #12)

Read the latest installment to The Morningsider series:

Issue 3 – Act 4
Where Do We Go From Here?

This act concludes Issue 3 and also wraps up the current story arc “Wildlife in Morningside Park”.

I can’t tell you how much I have appreciated the comments and feedback I have received on the installments of this arc.  Your encouragement has really fed my drive.

I have plans for continuing the Morningsider’s adventures past this point – possibly in a new arc or maybe in a few one-shot issues.  I have not, however, set a date for the next installment, as I may need to do some research before I get back into the swing of things.

Also, for all you Buffy fans, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 #7 comes out today.  Be sure to pick it up soon, as they sell out fast.

Note: You can always navigate through the series using the “The Morningsider” link up in the header.

Wage Slavery 5: The Gone Cats

When last we left the WildeRix, he had given up on the rock and roll lifestyle. Let’s see what happens next…

When I quit the band, I moved back to my parents’ place for a while. I knew my dad would have work for me with his heating and air conditioning business. He always needed help. After I stopped working at the cattle ranch on my college breaks, I started working with Dad. Although initially, it didn’t entail much actual work. I would fetch his tools from the van, hold a flashlight for him. Basically, I served as his third arm.

Since I didn’t have a lot to do, I would often sit in the old church van that Dad had turned into his work van and read. I got on a Jack Kerouac kick for a while, and read On the Road and Dharma Bums and tried to get lost in the adventures I wanted to have.
